As was stated in the very first SCMC conference brochure in 1951, in the schedule will be time " for recreation and private consultation with the faculty and members of the provincial committee. Not the least important is the close companionship and discussion with many fellow musicians... This is a rare and valuable experience, cementing life-long friendships. Not infrequently, much invaluable learning results from informal discussion at the dinner table or on a leisurely stroll along some mountain trail.” These very words could be penned today - 67 years later - about the spirit of the Sewanee Church Music Conference.

Monday Evening Newbie Reception

On Monday evening after supper, there is a New Attendees Reception, sponsored by the Board of Directors of the Sewanee Church Music Conference.  This will be an opportunity for the board members and new attendees to become better acquainted over beverages and light snacks.   New  attendees will have an opportunity to learn more about the conference, its staff, history, and its mission in a relaxed environment.

Tuesday Evening Concert & Reception

SONUS will sing for us on Tuesday.  It's a real treat to hear this Nashville group.  This modern a capella ensemble has recently released their first recording, available on Spotify, iTunes and Apple Music.  (The concert will be preceded by a porch gathering at Fulford Hall.)

Wednesday Evening Recital

On Wednesday evening we'll be treated to the Hancock Memorial recital presented this year by renowned organist Jack Mitchener.  Reception at Spencer Hall will follow.

Thursday Evening with Mark Schweizer

This year, the 69th Conference will celebrate the publication of Mark’s last liturgical mystery, The Choir Director Wore Out, with an evening of hilarity and fun.  Mark is the man behind St. James Music Press, an enterprise that began at the Sewanee Church Music Conference.

Friday Evening BBQ

On Friday evening, after the conclusion of Evensong, attendees are treated to a delicious bar-b-que dinner featuring barbecued beef, chicken, all the usual sides, fizzy libations, and desserts.  This is a wonderful time of food and fellowship provided by the excellent staff at McClurg.  (We'll be on the spacious back patio of the Dining Hall.)

Friday Evening Frolic

A favorite social event at the Sewanee Church Music Conference is the Frolic, which is a variety/comedy show put on by the attendees of the conference.  Brief skits and acts (appropriate to a church conference and mixed audience) are performed.  This is definitely a crowd pleaser and an event very much anticipated each year.  This year it'll be held in THE PIT.

Saturday Evening Banquet

We have a real dress-up, grown-up event on Saturday evening of the conference.  The banquet is held at the glorious Sewanee Inn, whereupon we wrap up our week with fine dining, Kodak moments, and the newly instated (2018) Director's Award.

Lois Fyfe Shopping

Participants in the conference will continue to benefit from being able to shop at the Lois Fyfe Music display of choral and organ music and other goodies.  Shop 24/7 (even in your PJs)!

Pop-up Hymnsings

There are many talented organists and pianists and singers at the conference.  As you wander about the campus in the evenings, you might just happen across an impromptu gathering of folks around a piano.  We have been known to break out into old timey Gospel hymn-singing on occasion.  All you need  is your memory and a few cells of vocal cord power left over from the day's rehearsals.

Time Out and About

When you need a break from the conference’s busy schedule, take time to explore this wonderful area.  Within a few minutes you can be in the workshops of skilled craftsmen, or in a unique academic setting, or at scenic areas of great beauty. Whatever your interests, available time, or physical condition, there is something in this area to delight and refresh you.  Visit our AREA GUIDE for things to do if you arrive to the conference early, or if you'll stay in the area after the conference concludes, or if you just need a beautiful locale to take a breather!

Both the towns of Monteagle and Sewanee, including the University of the South Campus have great restaurants and coffee shops for you to enjoy.  Click here for a list of favorite local restaurants and watering holes.

Evenings at-large

During the evening hours, following rehearsal and before bed, Sewanee Church Music Conference attendees enjoy great times of social leisure, be it on the town, around a piano or organ on campus,  or in one of the dorm common rooms.  During this time, members are free to enjoy cocktails, snacks and lots of fun conversation and fellowship. This is a great way to re-kindle old acquaintences and foster new friendships!  There will be nightly "hospitality" offered in Quintard Hall Commons.  Drop by!
